Last night a friend and I went to the Ogden theater in Denver to see the Dresden Dolls. Those who know me might find it strange that I who favor opera, classical, jazz, crooning, blues and 60’s rock would be found at a live underground, dark cabaret. Well if left to my own devices I probably would have never gone. But despite the ringing in my ears that persists yet this morning and the fact that we got out after midnight I really enjoyed the show.
Brian and Amanda are fantastic performers their use of the cabaret/theater aesthetic plays well with their eclectic and adoring crowd. Theresa and I were not the oldest members of the audience but we were definitely in the top 5%.
One of the most enjoyed songs of the night was “coin operated boy” from their self-titled 2004 album. While the version on YouTube below is good it is far tamer and much more refined than the live version which was raucous and all the more fun because of the audience’s involvement.
All in all I had a great time and was exposed to a genre I’m not typically exposed to. I would go again but I would definitely need earplugs for my ancient hearing.
