I am a definite fan of the Simpson’s – I’ve not missed a single episode and have watched them all more than once – but I learned some things about the show and it’s impact on popular culture – even that of other countries – by watching it.

I don’t typically write about social media from a personal use perspective. I try to stick with the business side of things. However, every once in a while I run across an application that resonates with me or that I think is just too cool to not share. Yesterday I found one of those apps. It’s called Loopt. Basically it uses the GPS function on a user’s cell phone to provide a social-mapping service. The company provides a new way for friends to connect, share, and explore in the mobile environment.

Loopt shows users where friends are located and what they are doing via detailed, interactive maps on their mobile phones. The cool little apps also helps friends connect on the fly and navigate their social lives by orienting them to people, places, and events.

And as any good social app should Loopt lets users share location updates, geo-tagged photos, and comments with friends in their mobile address book or on online social networks, communities, and blogs.

I stumbled across a service called BillShrink that purports to help average folks save time and money when it comes to managing everyday services such as credit cards and cell phone plans.

BillShrink uses a free, web-based service that provides users with personalized recommendations for everyday services like cell phone plans and credit cards. The recommendations are computed in real-time by matching a users usage profile against millions of different options in that users market (this according to the marketing documentation on BillShrink’s website). The results enable users to view and compare options so they can make a well-informed decision that maximizes savings.

To get started, you will first select the service category of interest (BillShrink currently covers credit cards and cell phone plans but says they will be adding additional services soon). From there, you will be prompted to enter some details about your usage pattern, which will be used to compute your personalized recommendations.

Hey, right now any savings helps. Right?!?

It’s not often anymore that I run across something on the web that actually feels new to me. But today I ran across this really cool site called nonsociety. I love it. The layout is really cool – instead of vertical scrolling like most sites do this site scrolls horizontally. That isn’t necessarily new but the way these gals present their info is pretty unique and damn cool. I lost an hour just going through days of these very graphical posts that compelled and captivated me much more than a typical blog’s posts do.

This is cool stuff…

Soon perhaps any of us who wanted could ride into space – for a price. But beyond my dream of going into space events like this will create the competition needed to make space travel more affordable so that companies can perform work and/or experiments in space the benefits of which we are only starting to imagine.

hallelujah wireless power is here

I’ve been dreaming about and asking for wireless power for years. I’ve always made the joke that we have it already it’s just that the downside is high – lightening really hurts!

On Geekzone yesterday Mauricia Freitas posted about a wireless power transmission demonstration he saw at CES which is precisely what I’ve been wanting.

March of Dimes Mudd Volleyball
